Indoor/Outdoor: A Swedish-American Art Exhibit

INDOOR/OUTDOOR is an exhibition exploring how the different climatic conditions of Sweden and Southern California influence the way artists depict indoor and outdoor spaces.

INDOOR/OUTDOOR features the work of Southern California artists from the Feminist Image Group (FIG) and Swedish artists from Krogen Amerika.

Done in collaboration with the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, SDAI will feature the work of Sweden’s Krogen Amerika artists and the Athenaeum Arts Center (AAC) will feature the Southern California Feminist Image Group.

Curated jointly by SDAI Deputy Director Sarah Trujillo-Porter and AAC Bilingual Manager Daniela Kelly, both venues will include portrayals of physical and psychological aspects of interior and exterior spaces. By visiting the artwork displayed at both locations, similarities and differences between the cultures become apparent.

BACKGROUND:

In 2017 and 2018, Feminism Now, a traveling feminist art show, was developed jointly by Anna Stump, founder of FIG, and Asa Kvissberg, a member of both FIG and Krogen Amerika. That successful exhibition made stops in San Diego, Los Angeles, and Stockholm, and became the precursor to the binational collaboration that is INDOOR/OUTDOOR.

The Feminist Image Group (FIG) is a coalition of women artists who have bonded in their common creative focus on women’s issues and concerns. Opportunities to discuss and show work are openly shared among members, many of whom independently show work locally and internationally. FIG members collaborate to promote an inclusive world view that allows all voices to be heard.

Krogen Amerika started as an 18th century structure built in Linköping, Sweden that was at one time used as a way station for Swedish immigrants preparing to emigrate to the United States. The historic building is now the site of a print collective made up of artists who work primarily in dry needle, etching, woodcut, photopolymer, and silkscreen techniques.

June 8 - July 2, 2019 at Athenaeum Arts Center Logan Heights for Southern California perceptions by Feminist Image Group (FIG).

June 21 - July 7, 2019 at SDAI for Swedish perceptions by Krogen Amerika.
